Moving to Michigan with another states CPL?

If you’re relocating to Michigan and already have a valid Concealed Pistol License (CPL) or Concealed Carry Permit from another state, it’s important to understand how the law changes once you establish residency here.

Many new residents are surprised to learn that while Michigan honors concealed carry permits from most other states, those reciprocity privileges end once you become a Michigan resident.

Reciprocity Ends When Residency Begins

As an out-of-state resident, you can legally carry concealed in Michigan if your home state’s permit is recognized here. However, once you receive a Michigan driver’s license (or state ID), you are officially considered a Michigan resident. At that point, your out-of-state CPL is no longer valid for concealed carry within Michigan’s borders.

This means that in order to continue carrying concealed legally, you must apply for and obtain a Michigan-issued CPL. Simply holding on to your old state’s permit is not enough once you’ve switched your residency.

Why This Matters

Failing to make this transition could put you at risk of carrying concealed illegally—even though you had a valid permit just days or weeks earlier in another state. Michigan law is very clear on this point: reciprocity is extended only to non-residents. Residents must carry under Michigan’s licensing system.

Steps to Take

  1. Meet Training Requirements –Your first step toward receiving a Michigan CPL is to take, and pass, a qualified course. We offer that at Detroit Arms! www.DetroitArms.com
  2. Apply for a Michigan CPL – Once you receive your Michigan driver’s license, begin the application process with your county clerk.

Normally there is a 6 month residency requirement prior to being able to apply, but if you have a valid CPL from any other state, that waiting period is WAIVED.
  3. Submit Your Application – Provide proof of training, identification, and fingerprints as part of your application.
  4. Wait for Approval – Michigan law provides a set timeframe for processing applications, but it’s smart to apply as soon as possible to avoid a lapse in your ability to carry legally.

Your new CPL should arrive in the mail in approximately 3 weeks prior to application, it may take as long as 45 days, but that’s rare.

YOU MAY NOT CARRY until you have actually received the CPL license in the mail.

Final Thoughts

Moving to a new state comes with plenty of adjustments, and concealed carry laws are no exception.

If you’re planning a move to Michigan, be proactive about transitioning your permit to a Michigan CPL.

Doing so ensures you remain compliant with the law and continue to enjoy your right to carry responsibly. Detroit Arms can help!
